About the event
NOTE: Participants must sign up for the full week of camp. SCAAC's participation is only a part of the larger camp experience. Sign up on the Y website: HERE.
We’re partnering with the YMCA on an art installation for their new teen room. Their summer camp for early teens (grades 6 – 9) is called Challenger Camp, and over the course of 4 of the weeks, we’ll be at Arrowhead Ranch on Camano Island creating the mural elements based on weekly themes. SCAAC will install the mural and we’ll do an opening reveal at the Y in August/September.Â
Each week of camp has a theme: Earth, Wind, Fire and Water. Local artist, Katie Walton, has designed a 3D mural installation that uses each theme as an element of the mural. We’re working with the Y to incorporate as much of their vision and camp goals as possible. We are aiming to be intentional and thoughtful. We want the students to project their creativity and use this project for self-reflection as well as expression. Yes, it will look cool. We also want the campers to give it feeling and meaning.
We will participate in two sessions per week: one hour on Monday, and three hours on Thursday. The art teacher will meet the campers on Monday to review the project, and then art creation would happen on Thursday. Materials would be provided.Â
