About the event

Class Description:

Fair Weather Painting; Hacks, Tips & Tools to capture a plein air look when you prefer to paint mostly indoors

Taught by Lydia Crouch https://www.lydiaccreativelife.com/

Do you love the thought of painting on location, but you get too tired or too cold to actually love being outside long enough to actually finish a piece?  Or maybe your hands get too cold to hold the brush after a while?  Do you enjoy painting more slowly, but the light changes before you can capture the scene?  Do you get frustrated with painting from your photos but you can’t quite recreate the colors when you get back to your studio?  Do you run out of space on your page or find images running off the page when you paint from real life?

This class is for you!

You and I have been invited to hold an outdoor class (weather permitting) at Our Legacy Fields Lavender Farm (Stanwood).  We will use this opportunity to learn:

  • How to make a simple viewfinder to frame a view
  • How to use your smartphone or iphone to sketch in proportion, frame a view, and edit to take back to your studio so that you can recreate those colors even after the light changes.
  • Discover a very artist friendly app to use whether you are indoors or out
  • Design a color key to lock in the magic before the light changes or you head back to your studio to finish later

After the instructional portion, you’ll be set loose to wander and create to your heart’s content.

Each participant will need to bring:

• iphone or smartphone with apps preloaded and the ability to use data without wifi

• Your favorite portable art supplies (oils, acrylics, watercolor, color pencils)  It is best for the instructional portion to use only one medium.  Once you’re off on your own, you can mix media to your heart’s content.

• a sketch pad the works for your media

• water both for drinking and for washing your brushes

Optional:

• camp chair or blanket

• portable easel or artboard

• sunhat, sunglasses and sunscreen

• your own hot drinks  and snacks (NOTE: The farm gift shop sells cold beverages and a selection of ice cream treats.  They also sell farm-made gifts and lavender products.  You can also borrow a picnic blanket and take your home-packed picnic out in the field to enjoy!)

The weather should be lovely, but if it is raining at the venue, we will not meet.  We will then reconvene on the rain check date of July 20th 10am-1pm  (Lydia is a true fairweather painter.  So we will make sure it’s doable!)

This class is non-refundable.  If we are rained out and you can not make the rain check date, no further options will be offered.

Recommended for intermediate artists.
